Welcome to the Education Governance Commission website

As co-chairs of the Commission, we thank you for visiting this site and for your interest in the education system in Prince Edward Island.  Education is at the heart of our social and economic progress, and will shape our future in a world increasingly based on human knowledge and skills. The responsibility of preparing our children for the future is shared among parents, the education system, and the community.  Our education governance structures and processes – or more simply, who does what, and how things are done – are critically important to the fulfillment of that shared responsibility to our children.

To address these issues, and to better realize these opportunities, the Government of Prince Edward Island established an Education Governance Commission in June 2011.

We have been asked to examine and make recommendations on governance structures, mechanisms, and processes to ensure leadership and accountability for student learning outcomes and for the effective, efficient, responsive operation of Prince Edward Island’s educational system…

We need to hear the views and advice of Islanders on these vital matters.  To get things started, we have developed a Discussion Paper: Charting the Way which poses a series of questions about how to best shape our education system. We invite you to review the discussion paper and other information materials on this website, and we ask you to send us your ideas and take part in our discussions across Prince Edward Island over the coming weeks.

We can all agree that education is a shared responsibility, as it has a profound impact on the future careers, health, and quality of life of all Island youth – but we also recognize that there are many different views and ideas on the best way to fulfill this responsibility. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your voice heard, and to offer your insights and ideas on how best to structure the education system in Prince Edward Island.

Sincerely,

Carrie St Jean and Bill Whelan
